My setup Personally I have found Alfred and Hazel to be the biggest game changers Most of the work goes on in the background. The always on mac mini downloads attachments, renamesm sorts, discards, creates aliases with a bunch of Hazel rules. The stuff is then available across all devices. For example, if I get a utility bill, it is downloaded, renamed with the Utility Provider, Type of Fuel, amount paid etc. Then is moved to the finance folder and into the financial quarter subfolder. As I claim a portion for WFH, an alias is also placed into my company folder. I only store documents in 1 place, i.e dropbox and in Zotero use the file link function. In this way, my originals are: a) Not duplicated b) the originals remain pristine (Zotero 6 saves annotations as a separate layer) Therefore, I have access to original documents AND annotations across all devices without any duplication.

I’ve been playing around with Obsidian for a few weeks now and Dataview, Buttons and QuickAdd are just awesome. Tinkering until everything looks and works how you want it is so satisfying. â¤ï¸

What level are you studying at? High school, uni, postgrad? If undergraduate or below I would recommend keeping your notes in the course format for now. So a folder for course, then notes for lectures and seminars, and use links to connect concepts through the notes and tags to categorize them into topics. Courses at those level are generally designed in a way that leads you through the material, groups it in ways designed to help you understand and contextual use it, and builds on concepts cumulatively as you go, and exams and assignments are generally designed around the course outline, so accessing that information in that format (I think) is useful. Of course YMMV. Once the course is done, or if you have time alongside it you can also atomize that information and record that info separate from the class structure so you can build on those ideas with further research. Also a good exercise for deepening your understanding and recall, because you’re actively working with and processing the concepts (but as I said, I’d do this optionally because courses are generally designed in a specific way to help you process and understand the info, so I would prioritize that until you’re doing you’re own self-directed study) Which brings me onto if you’re doing postgrad or research work: I think having things set up according to concepts and ideas is the most valuable, because that’s mostly what that level of study is about - recording and learning, breaking it down, putting it back together in unique ways with your own insights. So I have literature notes which record, chronologically, the discussions and ideas of a text and then I also break that information out into concept related notes which is where the synthesis between my research, thoughts, and the work of others are synthesised and gradually become papers

“How to make notes for reference, not self-improvement: A practical guide to messy notes meant to be used, not admired” aka The Konik Method of Making Notes (never not gonna feel weird that people call it that, i did not coin this term) written out as a reasonably comprehensive article instead of a bunch of disjointed videos, is now live:

I feel like this is some kind of pro-tip, but I started titling my books and articles using their cite, and it’s really sweet. Browsing a folder of works or sources is like reading a bibliography. So easy. And a link to the source note is the bib reference.

After trying many different approaches for structuring literature notes, I’ve found a low-key solution I’m happy with. The procedure is:
- Write notes while reading. Place under “notes.”
- When done reading (not before), start writing summary and elaboration.
The summary describes the content of the source. I decide on the structure and what’s included depending on my needs, and it’s written in my own words. The elaboration (or extended abstract as some call it) contains my reflections on the source, compare with other sources etc.

1.0 has dramatically changed how to create new themes, which is why the original Obsidian October event did not include a “Theme” category.
Not any more! Now that 1.0 is available to everyone, we’re adding the Theme category to O_O and extending the deadline by 2 weeks. The deadline is now November 13th.
This Saturday (Oct 15), Stephan (@Unknown), who was the mastermind behind the 1.0 redesign, will walk you through how to create a theme for Obsidian 1.0. Join the live event if you’re interested! The recordings will also be posted if you can’t make it to the live event.

hello, anyone using the 2.0 beta of Longform: I just pushed a new beta that corrects outstanding bugs and updates styling to use the 1.0 style system. My hope is that this is the last beta before general release, but that depends on if any new bugs are found :). If you’re using BRAT you’ll need to manually remove and re-add the plugin, as the version number hasn’t changed. https://github.com/kevboh/longform/releases/tag/2.0.0
